Learning More About Savings and Investments

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) is an umbrella organization of provincial and territorial securities regulators. Their purpose is to educate Canadians about the securities industry, the stock markets and how to protect investors from investment scams. The CSA provides a wide variety of educational materials on securities and investing. It has produced brochures and booklets explaining various topics such as how to choose a financial adviser, mutual funds, and investing via the Internet.

The Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) insures eligible deposits made to its member financial institutions in the event of their failure. Its website provides information for consumers on deposit insurance in Canada, what is covered and what is not, and a full list of member institutions.

The Investor Education Fund (IEF) is an independent not-for-profit organization created by the Ontario Securities Commission, which develops and promotes unbiased, independent financial information, programs and tools to help consumers make better financial and investing decisions. The IEF website offers a series of fact sheets providing basic information to potential investors, from the five basic steps to take when investing, to tips on wise investing. The IEF website also provides information on how to protect your money and how to spot investment fraud.

The Canadian Bankers Association (CBA) is the national industry association of financial institutions. The CBA also promotes financial literacy to help Canadians make informed financial decisions. The CBA website provides information on a number of financial topics, including different savings and investment options.

The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing Ontario’s capital markets. Providing protection to investors is a key part of the OSC’s mandate. Specifically, the OSC works to protect investors by making and enforcing rules governing the securities industry in Ontario. The OSC website also provides information, tools and resources for investors, including warnings about individuals and companies that appear to be engaging in activities that may pose a risk to investors.

For residents of Quebec

The Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) is the body mandated by the government of Québec to regulate the province's financial markets and provide assistance to consumers of financial products and services. The AMF website offers a series of financial education tools and publications for consumers on financial services including investing. The fraud prevention section of the AMF website also provides information on potentially fraudulent investment seminars. Québec residents can contact the AMF for detailed information on the complaint process, and advice on how to resolve a financial services related complaint.
